INTRAUTERINE ROBOTS
Welcome to WOMBOT©TM (Womb Robot) project page, dedicated to fetal health.
GOAL
No child deserves to be born defective. We want to help all unfortunate babies to get their critical cures in time - even before they join our world.

AIMS OF WOMBOT©TM
To further improve our toolkit for accessing and treating live embryos / fetuses while they are still inside the pregnant uterus. This starts with direct in vivo visualization (embryoscopy / fetoscopy), which is an essential prerequisite for any medical procedures. Then, specialized instrumentation is developed for accessing specific parts of the fetal body (e.g., mouth, anus, urethra) to perform simple endoscopic interventions. For more complex surgeries, such as heart correction, we started to conceive prototypes for precise stereotactic penetration of the developing embryo.
HOW IT WORKS
Unlike our other projects that already resulted in clinical deployment and/or commercial licensing (e.g., in vitro embryo diagnostics, or robotic knowledge building), this work is still largely experimental. For example, we have a working prototype of surgical treatment of embryonic dysraphisms (failures to merge immature tissues to form a new organ), or a successful proof of concept in the area of prenatal gene therapy. At this stage, the work is limited to animal models and equipment engineering, while research directions are being derived from our clinical findings in human prenatal diagnosis. One of the most challenging issues is to ensure reliable functioning via remote control interfaces, and semi-autonomous or autonomous operation of certain tricky modules.
