GENERAL NOTES
Scientifically independent employees are special professionals that are subsidiary to their home organization and work on organization-defined plans and goals, while they exercise and enjoy a very high level of intellectual and in part also operational freedom. Typically, scientifically independent professionals are those experts that had reached the maturity level allowing them to study or work without being personally tutored, mentored, closely monitored, helped, or fed with detailed ideas and plans. Of course, they follow institutional rules and aims, communicate with others, exchange ideas, and intellectually cross-pollinate themselves and their groups, but this is an additional secondary benefit of synergy and not the primary prerequisite for them to be creative, productive and successful. Other key signs of scientific independence include (i) a significant diversion from their former bosses' or mentors' ideation portfolios (while maintaining complementarity or synergy may be reasonable and beneficial, but not necessary), and (ii) the proven ability to acquire and sustain sufficient extramural funding (grants, sponsorship, etc.) for their projects.
